Sarah 'Sally' Gibson Flandrau Cutcheon
(1867-1947)
Sally was born in Kentucky and only six months old when her mother died in 1867. Julia S. Dinsmore raised her from an infant and because of the child’s asthma, Julia constantly fretted over her health and kept her out of school much of the time. When she was in her teens, Sally was sent to Miss Porter’s school in Connecticut. Like her sister, she began spending more time in St. Paul as she grew older and was quite the belle, with parties, sledding, and tennis to take up her time. In 1891 she married Frank Cutcheon, a young lawyer in her father’s firm. The couple, who remained childless, moved to New York City in 1895 where Frank became very successful. When their niece, Isabella Greenway, was sixteen, they invited her and her mother to live with them and Frank helped pay for Isabella’s education. The relationship between Sally, Frank, and Isabella remained close. After Isabella purchased a home in Santa Barbara, California, Sally and Frank bought one nearby. That is where Sally died years later. She is buried in the Dinsmore Graveyard.
